Mimesis

Mimesis was a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Abigail Tulis, presented at the Château de Jolimont, Watermael-Boitsfort, Brussels. Unfolding across the estate's gardens and interiors, the exhibition invited an encounter with the artist's most intimate landscape probing the paradox of boundaries between private and public, interior and exterior, self and other.
Tulis's practice draws on Classical Antiquity, Medieval and Renaissance sources, interwoven with a sustained attention to the natural world. Paintings, among them her anamorphic female landscapes, coexisted with sculpture, small-scale drawings, gum print self-portraits, and poetry, composing an immersive and deeply personal body of work.
The exhibition was accompanied by a programme of events conceived in the same spirit of slowness and sensory attentiveness. Among them, Pluies (22 August 2021), a sonic performance by belgian artist Pauline Mikó, in which bioelectric exchanges between the artist's body and the root systems of plants were translated into sound. Music made simultaneously for human ears and for the plants themselves, quietly redistributing agency within the living world.
