The Mourning Dove

Rebecka Tollens works in charcoal, drawing luminous scenes that hover between personal mythology and the textures of everyday life. Her drawings conjure childhood, family, dreams rendered in a visual language that resists fixed meaning, appealing instead to something more instinctive: the pure register of emotion. The Mourning Dove is a series tracing the journey of birds toward a weeping rain cloud. Rooted in folklore and quiet symbolism, the work speaks of thresholds between life and death, grief and hope, the earthly and the beyond. The mourning dove, messenger of passing souls, plants seeds of hope in barren ground. Tollens does not illustrate. She opens. Her surreal, timeless compositions softened by the dreamlike landscapes of her Swedish childhood hold the viewer in a state of suspended interpretation, where meaning remains beautifully unresolved.
